Started in March 2000 by Ronald Jessop, at the time a junior mechanical engineer working at the Atomic Energy Corporation at Pelindaba, a facility which had everything a freshly-graduated engineer could wish for: every type of manufacturing facility, a vast store of every type of material, the mentorship of dozens of experienced engineers and scientists and an air of mystery because the facility was afterall the result of a nuclear weapons programme. This was not to last because unfortunately (or fortunately) nuclear weapons went out of fashion in South Africa and the Atomic Energy Corporation had to retrench enormous numbers of staff. Ronald’s number came up and with nothing to lose he set up a consultancy to design and manufacture bits of equipment needed for the various spin-off projects happening at Pelindaba as commercially-viable peaceful purposes were sought for the various technologies developed during the nuclear program.
Varsity pal Anton Menkveld joined JIM in 2001 and with his electrical engineering background JIM was able to offer a broader range of services to a broader range of clients. The business grew year on year to a staff complement of 10 and JIM relocated to Centurion, a more central location in the economic hub, better for clients and staff alike.
In 2008, around the time of the global financial crisis, it was a tumultuous time in JIM’s history, which lead to dramatic changes, with Anton emigrating to Perth and Ronald relocating JIM to Cape Town, where today we operate from comfortable offices in the Century City precinct, well located adjacent to Montague Gardens industrial area. For the last 5 years we have focused on mechanical design and supply of machinery, equipment and products that will improve lives in some meaningful way.
Since the year 2000, when we started, we have had the pleasure of working on some pretty diverse projects. Please take a look at our portfolio to see what we’ve been up to all these years. Then let us know if there’s anything we can do for you.
